If you’re passionate about dabbing, it’s not enough to have a standard setup. You want your own custom dab rig. Something where every element has been hand picked to fit your own wants and needs. The year is 2020, almost 2021, and customization is the name of the game. What game? You’re playing it.
Enter: quartz inserts. Inserts essentially help distribute and retain heat by adding weight and surface area, not to mention improving flavor. All you have to do is just drop it in. In today’s guide, our online smoke shop team explains the biggest benefits of quartz inserts and our recommendations on how to use them.
Quartz Inserts, Defined
No, quartz inserts are not something you put into places people play tennis. Basically, quartz inserts are small little buckets that go into your banger. They come in a variety of sizes and styles, such as opaque-bottom quartz or traditional quartz. They can take your already great dab experience and level it up.
Quartz Inserts With Benefits
Quartz Inserts come with a plethora of benefits. There is nothing worse than a dirty banger. Obvious issues of cleanliness aside, it simply doesn’t look good. Imagine taking a pretty person home and offering them a hit without cleaning your filthy banger first. It’s just bad form. Luckily, quartz inserts help your banger stay clean. The concentrates go in the insert, not the banger, and thus there isn’t even contact.
Quartz inserts also give you more control over the temperature of your dab. See, the insert adds another layer between your banger and your concentrates, which can slow the dissipation of heat with the magic of physics. Physicists will tell you that thermodynamics is a well understood science and not in fact magic, but why would we believe them? Never trust a sorcerer. Anyways, some people even drop their inserts immediately after torching their banger, without waiting for a cool down, as the insert will still delay the spread of heat and give you a nice low temperature dab.
Inserts are a little more forgiving, as well. If you accidentally overheat your banger or cut your cooldown too much, a quartz insert can keep you from wasting cannabinoids and terps. Just remember, no matter how fancy your set up, do not under any circumstances heat anything to the point it is red hot.
The Downsides
It would be remiss to list pros without cons, and quartz inserts have a few. For one thing, it takes a little practice to really nail it (pun not intended). It will likely take you a few tries to get the motions down right with a new set up.
It also adds a little complexity and new steps to your dabbing. Dropping the insert in and taking it out adds new steps, which can consume precious seconds, similar to saying “be right back” instead of just shortening it to “BRB” like a speedy pro. On a similar note, you won’t be able to take your insert out until it has cooled down, which means a little more waiting. Patience is a virtue, young grasshopper. And all good things in life require a little effort.
Techniques and How To
There’s a couple different ways to make proper use of your quartz banger. Neither technique is “right” or “wrong,” but they will have different effects by way of temperature. You see, lower temperatures preserve the cannabinoids and terpenes as they evaporate at lower temperatures than THC, giving you differences in taste and potency.
One option is the “drop in” technique. First things first, load your dab into your quartz insert. Setting this up in advance will always help make your timing easier. Next, heat up your banger with a torch. Make sure you heat it for however much time is appropriate given your particular banger and style of dabbing. Next, wait about ten seconds for your cool down time. Yes, you read that right. Then, simply drop your quartz insert into your banger. You can do this with your hand or a pair of reverse tweezers. Obviously, don’t touch the banger you literally just heated up with a torch. Turns out hot things can hurt. Next, put your carb cap on your banger. Watch your concentrates, and take your dab when they start bubbling. Q-tip the leftovers. Before you take the insert out, make sure you wait at least a couple minutes before you take out your quartz insert, so it can cool.
The other possible technique is the “cold start” technique. Once again, your first step is to load your dab into your quartz insert. This time, however, just drop your insert into your banger right away. After the quartz insert is in the banger, heat the banger with a torch, and wait until the extracts start bubbling. Then turn off the torch, quickly put on your carb cap, and take a hit. If you do the “drop in” technique and bungle it, you can always switch to this one to salvage your concentrates.
And there you have it! Everything you need to know to get started on your own journey with quartz inserts.
